PROTOCOL. With the signing of the Protocol of Phytosanitary Requirements for Bolivia, the Chinese market is opened to the export of chia, which is estimated to generate 100 million dollars to the country.

At 00:41 A. M. Bolivian time, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Celinda Sosa Lunda, signed in the People's Republic of China the Protocol of Phytosanitary Requirements for Bolivia to export chia, estimating that 9,000 tons are traded annually to the Asian giant.

On behalf of China, the signing was in charge of the Vice Minister of Commerce, Yu Jianhua. The Bolivian Ambassador to China, Hugo Siles, and other authorities from both countries also participated.

The signing is the result of arduous public-private efforts, in coordination with the Chamber of Exporters, Logistics and Investment Promotion of Santa Cruz (CADEX), whose president Osvaldo Barriga said that, as a result of the opening of the Chinese market, the value of exports could reach more than $us 100 million.

The general manager of Cadex, Martín Salces, added that the management has been carried out since last year and that the Chinese market represents a great potential for Bolivian products.

 "For years we have been working to find more markets for Bolivian chia. CADEX brought together the companies in the sector, coordinated with SENASAG and defined the critical route to reach the Chinese market. Today we can say that the doors to China have opened and now it is time to respond to the demand of the Asian giant, overcoming the difficulties we face today," said the general manager of this Chamber, Martin Salces.

Background

Between August 28 and September 3, 2023, a delegation of Chinese experts evaluated the phytosanitary status of the country through visits to laboratories, production plots and industrial processing plants, among others.

As a result of the visits, in November 2023, China Customs sent the Draft Protocol of Phytosanitary Requirements for the export of chia seeds from Bolivia to China, for consideration by the National Agricultural Health and Food Safety Service (Senasag).

Between January and September 2024, Bolivian exports of chia seeds reported a value of $us 15.22 million, with a volume of 6,691 tons.
